The Page Rank Backlinks ‘Minefield’

If you ever wake up chanting – page rank backlinks SEO .gov. edu .cotton SERPS anchor text I need caffeine – then you may be getting bent out of shape with your backlinking efforts. But if you are then tempted to short circuit the process with a massive automated backlink spurt, then please don’t!

Why not? It’ll save time, won’t it? Let’s back pedal a bit and try to understand why Google rewards high page rank backlinks and backlinks in general (though not the ones from ‘bad’, ‘black hat’ sites). If we understand that we’ll also understand why they penalise marketers who are gaming the system.

A backlink from a respected site – .gov and .edu sites are always loved by Google – conveys a massive amount of respect and authority. The more of these high page rank backlinks you get to your site the better. But if hundreds suddenly appear, then Google – not surprisingly – calls ‘foul’.

Imagine you’re a local painter and decorator. It’s as if rather than having great testimonials from respected figures of authority in your community that you’ve decorated for, you bribe a whole bunch of them at once to say good things about you. Clearly you can’t have painted 500 houses in a week! That’s certainly how the Search Engines feel if you suddenly put tons of backlinks in.

You’re better off being consistent and persistent. You’re also better off generating good page rank backlinks in various ways rather than having a bunch appear out of nowehere – all from say social media sites. You’d find that suspicious and Google is no different.

So the best way to negotiate this backlinks ‘minefield’ is to persistently generate backlinks using a mixture of the following methods:

1. Blog commenting on relevant blogs – adding worthwhile and helpful contributions to the discussion.

2. Forum posting – adding insightful and substantial content to threads. Less isn’t more!

3. .Gov and .Edu links – cultivating a handful of .gov and or .edu links, not 1000 at a time! Fiverr is a great resource for finding people who’ll do this for $5.

4. Article Marketing – writing intelligent and helpful articles, optimised around one or two keyword phrases, using the keyword in the anchor text within the ‘resource box’.

5. Directory listings – this is a good one to outsource too. Just be careful about appearing in 2000 directories overnight.

With all these methods of generating good page rank backlinks, if you’re persistent and consistent you won’t upset Mother Google and risk being ‘sandboxed’.

Your site will keep climbing the rankings and your monetisation can then kick in and start giving you the sort of income that got you into this weird and wonderful business in the first place!
